ADSL Internet via telephone line
Internet can be accessed via your telephone line. This is a broadband service which allows you to use the internet and up to two telephone lines at once. It is called ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line). It is provided by the telephone company.
ADSL provides download speeds from 1.5 Mbps tp 16Mbps. This is ten to one hundred times faster than dial-up connection. To learn more, go to www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adsl
It is a straight-forward solution for internet connection and can be generally working within a few weeks if you have a Person Number. You actually only need your date of birth to sign up, but be warned that with only a date of birth, you have to sign up the old-fashioned way using a form signed and faxed by you to the provider. This is because you do not exist yet in Norway!
You can either:
- Wait for a modem to be posted to you. Pick up the modem from a post office that they don't always tell you the location of ... The modem is owned by the provider.
- Buy a wireless modem from us, which you get straight away and is yours to keep.
After applying for an ADSL service, you just have to then wait for the provider to arrange a day for them to come to your house to connect you and we come and set up your modem.
ADSL internet is provided by Telenor and Hesbynett. They can also provide you with a Norwegian telephone number and internet phone service. If you choose not to have a phone number with them, there is an extra small monthly charge. See our Telephone section for more information on fixed and internet phones.
There is a faster downloading ADSL service available called ADSL2+, but it is only available in certain parts of Stavanger. It's speed is dependent upon distance from the server. Both Telenor and Hesbynett provide a cheap and an expensive version of this. The cheap version has no technical support if things go wrong.
