TV via fiber optic cable

TV (and Internet and telephone) can be accessed via a fiber optic cable if the system has been laid in your road or apartment complex. This system provides all your local cable TV channels, your broadband internet and your telephone service. This ideal sounding solution has limits in Stavanger...
- There has to be fiber optic cable nearby.
- It then has to be connected to your house.
- It then has to be connected to a fiber optic modem.
All of these requirements are in the hands of the fiber optic cable company who have a significant backlog of work. It has been known to wait up to 6 months for connection. If your landlord has had Lyse installed, it is very helpful if you can get the previous customer number details from him/her, as Lyse's database can be inconsistent.
The cable comes in to a fiber optic modem, which is a junction box fixed to the wall inside the house, with its own power supply, called a "hjemmesentral". It has a series of ethernet connections which can then be wired to points around the house. There is no "box" required at the TV.
Fiber optic services in Stavanger are provided by Lyse (who also provide your electricity). They offer a wide choice of channels, but you have to sign up for a minimum of the basic package before you can pick and choose extra channels. Many channels are in English. They have a one time set up charge ("engangsbeløp") as well as monthly billing.
