Satellite TV

Norwegian satellite TV can be accessed via a dish on the outside of your house. This system provides all your local TV channels. The limitations are that:
- You have to have a dish mounted outside which can face the required part of the sky. Some apartment complexes will not allow dishes to be mounted on their structure.
- It has a mix of Norwegian and English speaking channels.
- You have to have a satellite box by your TV.
- The basic installation only allows for one outlet point in the house. To have cable on other TVs requires extra wiring around the house, a wireless system (which are distance limited), or additional satellite boxes.
- If you do not have a three year credit history in Norway, you have to pay for the entire year's subscription up front and go to their offices to sign a contract, in person.
As with cable TV, local Norwegian satellite TV packages have quite a few English-speaking programmes with Norwegian or Danish subtitles, such as Travel Channel, CNN, National Geographic etc.
They also show a fair amount of English and American shows on the national TV channels from NRK (pronounced en-err-kor!)
Satellite TV in Stavanger is provided by Viasat and CanalDigital. They provide a satellite dish, a satellite decoder box which is connected to your TV, and a card for access to the channels paid for. They have a fairly low cost for the decoder box and the dish, and installation is free. There is an initial set up charge, shipping charge and a charge for the card rental.
Billing is monthly or yearly, or a full year in advance for unlucky outsiders!
